As the President and CEO for the UA-ARC, Austin Yamada is responsible for the strategic development and operations of the University of Arizona’s Applied Research Corporation.
Prior to joining the UA-ARC, Austin served as Vice President for Intelligence Research at the Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation where he was responsible for extending the university’s fundamental research enterprise to applied, translational, and commercialization projects in intelligence and national security.
Austin completed a 25-year career as a government civil servant serving in positions of increasing responsibility in the intelligence and special operations communities, most notably as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Austin earned a B.S. degree in Earth Science from Montana State University in 1975 and a Master of Engineering Degree in Remote Sensing and Analytical Photogrammetry from Virginia Tech in 1981.
